Energy Performance+Architecture Award: the jury selects the inspired and committed architecture of Thom Mayne (Morphosis Architects)

Launched in 2006, the purpose of this award is to provide recognition on the occasion of interclima+elec for an internationally renowned architect who takes the energy performance of buildings (new or renovated) into account in his or her projects and who contributes in this way to the fight against global warming. It has the further objective of raising awareness amongst specifiers.

The Italian architect Mario Cucinella was the winner of the inaugural award in 2006, followed in 2008 by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

On 14th September of last year, Morphosis Architects, a practice based in California (United States) headed by Thom Mayne was chosen by the jury as the winner of the 3rd Energy Performance + Architecture Award. Thom Mayne will receive his award from the hands of Kengo Kuma, the previous winner of the Energy Performance +Architecture Award and Chairman of the jury, at a ceremony that will be held at interclima+elec 2010.
After having unanimously recognized the exceptional quality of the projects submitted by a selection of international candidates, the jury chose the one that offered the boldest architecture as well as a complete mastery of the energy constraints.
The entry submitted by Morphosis Architects included two recent projects: the construction of the new Federal Building in San Francisco and 41 Cooper Square, the new academic centre for the Cooper Union in New York.
These two projects attracted the attention of the jury through their inspired and committed architecture as well as for the integrated equipment that enables them to achieve a high level of energy performance and environmental quality.

Besides these projects, the Energy Performance + Architecture Award is an acknowledgement of Thom Mayne’s career, which is distinguished by the intelligence and commitment of his projects and that serves as a counterpoint to a standardized and conformist contemporary American architecture. Thom Mayne has inspired Morphosis with his concept and his rigorous research into the relationships between innovative buildings and their urban environment. Today, the 40 architects who make up Morphosis Architects symbolize a dynamic and evolutionary approach to architecture that responds to the social, economic, environmental, cultural, political and technological requirements of modern life.
